The Wall has made refugees of Palestinians. School children regularly see Israeli soldiers with weapons,close to the school. Settlers have set fire to the building. Adnam showed us a painting by his daughter, of such a scene. Within school, the children need activities to help them cope with the stress.
Moien used to teach in the Old City of Jerusalem from 1996 until 2004. He cannot now go to Jerusalem from AbuDis. Young people (14-17) are detained in prison for throwing stones and miss out on education for long periods.
Ala'a teaches at Jenin Basic Boys School No.1. His village was destroyed in 1949. He showed excellent pictures of schoolrooms and some activities. It excels at sport, has competitions to improve students' English Language, and workshops on communication skills, human rights and the abuse of women. Students have produced a magazine about human values. On the anniversary of Nakabah, students make and wear hats with the names of the villages which were destroyed.
Ghadeer shared information about the extent of settlements throughout the West Bank and East Jerusalem. Ma'ale Adummin is the largest - more like a city. Israelis have built the wall to protect these settlements, largely built on hillsides. Settlers can borrow money and get tax exemptions.
